As climate change continues to be a top global concern, more and more companies and individuals are taking steps to track and offset their carbon emissions. 

Carbon tracking and offsetting is the process of compensating emissions by investing in projects that reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 

While some argue that carbon offsetting is nothing more than a way to ease our conscience, the truth is that it can be an effective way to fight climate change. 

There are many reasons why carbon offsetting is on the rise. Firstly, climate change’s effects are becoming more evident, and people are looking for ways to mitigate their impact. Additionally, carbon offsets can be used to achieve corporate sustainability goals and demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Another reason carbon offsetting is gaining popularity is because it has become easier and more affordable to purchase offsets. This is an appealing solution for many people as it allows them to reduce their carbon footprint without making significant sacrifices.

The Netherlands has been a breeding ground for many innovative greentech startups, with various incubators and accelerators supporting entrepreneurs in testing their ideas, helping them get funding, and get their businesses up and running. These initiatives have played a big role in making the Netherlands a European leader in the cleantech field.

Several startups from Amsterdam have made it their mission to meet their environmental obligations. They are constantly striving to improve their sustainability levels and are working hard to set an example for other businesses to follow.

Skytree develops decentralised direct air capture (D-DAC) for applications, and the first market it is focused on commercialising is indoor farming. The Amsterdam-based company harnesses carbon through the power of decentralised direct air capture technology.

Born out of the European Space Agency (ESA), during the development of a CO2 scrubber, space scientists evaluated over 50 sorbents. Skytree founder, Max Beaumont, was a system engineer on this team and spun out the technology through the ESA incubator program ‘ESA-BIC’.

With a decade of research & development, the company has since registered 14 patents in 5 patent families across the US, Europe, and China. In addition, Skytree says it will monetise the technology through multiple use cases.

Regreener aims to restore ecosystems in an impactful and transparent way by planting trees and supports certified carbon-offsetting projects on behalf of its users. 

Currently, the company plants trees with its partners Eden Reforestation Projects and WeForest in Kenya, Mozambique, and Zambia.

By offering subscriptions and one-off contributions to individuals and companies, Regreener has created a complete platform to plant trees and fund CO2-reducing initiatives.

ClevAir is an Amsterdam-based smart building management solution that helps commercial real estate reduce energy consumption and emissions of CO2 by optimising HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condition). The company combines IoT devices and ML with its SaaS-based software tool and algorithms. 

The Dutch platform reduces energy consumption by 15-25 per cent and provides customers with insights, dashboards, and data to help create reports.

Greencast provides digital platform that enable companies to accurately measure, understand and report their climate impact 365 days. The company’s SaaS solution with ML-driven data processing helps you identify areas of emission hotspots to achieve concrete reductions fast.

GreenSwapp is an API for food platforms and supermarkets to track product and recipe-wise carbon footprint at scale using product metadata and machine learning. The Amsterdam startup allows its clients to track the impact of their entire inventory in seconds, identify high-impact products and suppliers to make better purchasing decisions, and communicate the climate impacts of their food to their customers.

Perpetual Next is a climate tech company that aims to reduce climate change by upgrading organic waste streams to valuable raw materials and products for sustainable use.

The Amsterdam company does this by reusing residual flows and upgrading organic residual flows into high-quality raw materials and products while contributing to the circular economy. In addition, the company works with low-grade, regional organic residues to minimise the environmental impact.

The company’s production facilities are in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, and Estonia. In June, the Dutch company raised €320M in a Series A round of funding for technology acquisitions and projects aimed at carbon removal.
